The students of the CAPS Collaborative Gateway High School were invited by farmer Jim Latanzzi of Hollis Hills Farm to watch Governor Baker tap a maple tree to begin the official start of the maple sugaring season in Massachusetts.
Hollis Hills Farm is the largest producer of maple syrup in the eastern half of Massachuetts. With over 300 producers of the pancake topping favorite statewide, the MA Dept. of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) asked for a volunteer to host the maple-sugaring season’s annual kickoff event. Hollis Hills was the lucky host selected for this honor in 2015! The luck continued when they learned that after 10 years of sending requests to the Governor’s office, MA’s newest Governor agreed with MDAR to attend the event to help kick off the season!
The Governor read a proclamation declaring March “Maple Month” in Massachusetts before using a hand tool for the ceremonial tapping of the tree. This was considered the official start of the syrup season!
